Artist Statement
The goal of a natural science illustrator is to combine the images of the natural world with elegant art technique to tell the story of science. The goal of a graphic designer is to combine the client’s images and words with elegant art technique to tell that client’s story… two sides of the same coin.
Since 1976, I have endeavored to provide elegant and functional art to help my clients tell their story to their audiences.
Artist Bio
Natural science illustration, using pencil, pen-and-ink, watercolor, colored pencil, acrylics, and digital techniques — or a combination of media — is my specialty. I enjoy depicting animals, plants, landscapes… any natural subject, from a portrait-style presentation to more technical illustrations. My second love is graphic design, and I have had many years of experience in everything from stationery design to print publication, book covers to billboards. I work primarily in Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. I have extensive experience with zoos and nature parks, preparing interpretive graphics, advertising, and publications.
My principal clients include Guidepost Books (book cover illustration); Precision Graphics/Prentice Hall (college-level textbook illustration); Binder Park Zoo and the Leila Arboretum, Battle Creek, MI (interpretive graphics, maps, publications); Otis Audubon Sanctuary (Hastings, MI) (interpretive graphics, maps, publications); , Renaissance Home and Garden (Kalamazoo, MI home decor shop, advertising and identity graphics); and various nature parks across the country (interpretive graphics, maps). Samples, references and estimates are available on request.
I am a resident of Battle Creek. BA in Art & Art Education, Michigan State University; freelance artist since 1976. Member since 1976, Guild of Natural Science Illustrators. President elect, Guild Of Natural Science Illustrators, as of the GNSI Annual Meeting, July 2007.
